Semi-Annual Maintenance Service (every 6 months)
Restraint System Check Check that the safety belt reminder light and all belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly. Check for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. Replace any torn or frayed safety belts. Also look for any opened or broken air bag coverings. (The air bag system does not need regular maintenance.)
Throttle System Inspection Inspect the throttle system for interference or binding, and for damaged or missing parts. Replace any components that have high effort or excessive wear.
Automatic/Manual Transmission/Transaxle Check Check the transmission/transaxle fluid level. Inspect the hydraulic clutch.
Engine Air Cleaner Filter Inspection Inspect engine air cleaner filter for excessive contaminates.
Engine Cooling System Inspection Inspect the hoses and have them replaced if they are cracked, swollen or deteriorated. Inspect all pipes, fittings and clamps. Clean the outside of the radiator and air conditioning condenser. Check coolant strength with refractometer. To help ensure proper operation, a pressure test of the cooling system and pressure cap is recommended at least once a year.
Brake Inspection Inspect the complete system. Inspect brake lines and hoses for proper hook-up, binding, leaks, cracks, chafing, etc. Inspect disc brake pads for wear and rotors for surface condition. Inspect other brake parts, including calipers, parking brake, etc. Note: more frequent brake inspections may be required if the vehicle is driven in conditions that result in frequent braking.
Tire Inspection (Including Tire Rotation Service) Check and correct tire pressure. Inspect tires and wheels for damage and wear. Measure tread depth.
Rotate tires to equalize the wear and obtain maximum life.
If equipped, reset tire pressure monitor. Check spare tire pressure and correct as required. For vehicles with underbody mounted spare tire, make sure that it is stored securely. Push, pull, and then try to rotate or turn the tire. If it moves, use the wheel wrench/ratchet to tighten the cable.
Wiper Blade Check Check wiper blades for tears or cuts and replace as required.
Check rear wiper, if applicable.
Inspect windshield for cracks or large chips.
Steering and Suspension System Inspection Inspect the front and rear suspension and steering system for damaged, loose or missing parts, signs of wear or lack of lubrication.
Inspect the power steering lines and hoses for proper hook-up, binding, leaks, cracks, chafing, etc. Clean and then inspect the drive axle boot seals for damage, tears or leakage.
Lubrication Service Apply dielectric silicone grease with a clean cloth. Silicone grease on weatherstrips will make them last longer, seal better, and not stick or squeak.
Lubricate all hinges and latches, including those for the body doors, hood, secondary latch, pivots, spring anchor, release pawl, rear compartment, glove box door, console door and any folding seat hardware. Lubricate the key lock cylinders with the lubricant Superlube®.
Ignition And Parking Brake Safety Check
Starter Switch Check Perform the following: attempt to start the engine in each gear and verify the starter works only in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). If the starter works in any other position, vehicle service is required.
Automatic Transaxle Shift Lock Control System Check With the engine off, turn the key to the ON position, but don’t start the engine. Without applying the regular brake, try to move the shift lever out of PARK (P) with normal effort. If the shift lever moves out of PARK (P), vehicle service is required.
Ignition Transaxle Lock Check While parked, and with the parking brake set, try to turn the ignition key to OFF/LOCK in each shift lever position. The key should turn to OFF/LOCK only when the shift lever is in PARK (P). Verify the key comes out only in OFF/LOCK.
Parking Brake And Automatic Transaxle Park (P) Mechanism Check Perform the following for both Parking Brake and Automatic Transaxle PARK Mechanism checks: park on an incline with the vehicle facing downhill. While applying the regular brake, set the parking brake. Check the parking brake’s holding ability: with the engine running and transaxle in NEUTRAL (N), slowly remove foot pressure from the regular brake pedal. Do this until the vehicle is held by the parking brake only. Check the PARK (P) mechanism’s holding ability: with the engine running, shift to PARK (P), then release the parking brake followed by the regular brake.
